Historical School Walks

Explore Educational Walks Celebrating Hereford’s History

The Hereford Guild of Mayor’s Guides offer walks in the historic city of Hereford. The Guild has been updating the offer to schools to include a range of topics that could be particularly relevant to a study of local history. The material can be adapted to suit the needs of any year group.

The themes include:-

  • The Anglo Saxon and Norman development of the town
  • The River Wye, its crossings and usage
  • The development of the town in the Tudor period in High Town with the market and Black and White House.
  • The Civil War
  • The Victorian period and assisting those in poverty
  • Some famous Hereford people, such as Owen Tudor, Nell Gwynne, St John Kemble and Sir Edward Elgar

The themes listed above are not exhaustive and would not all necessarily be covered on one walk. Each walk typically lasts an hour and we aim to cover the subject matter that is most relevant to the teacher. Experience has shown that the walk either provides a suitable starting point for a local history topic or can be a convenient way of bringing it to a conclusion. We have also produced some comprehensive notes that we supply to teachers for development into material that can be used in the classroom.

We have two guides, who come from an education background, one in primary schools and the other in secondary schools. Our aim is to use their wealth of experience in working with young people for the booked walks for schools. A maximum of 15 young people per group with accompanying adults tends to work well.

The school determines the ratio of adults to
young people and, of course, remains totally responsible for them at all times

Although by no means a substitute for a real walk and seeing things firsthand, we have also developed a virtual walk that can be delivered in school.

The presentation would last for about 45 minutes and there would be an opportunity for follow-up discussion on points of interest.

The cost for the walk is £7.50 per accompanying adult and £1 per young person up to the age of 18 years for 2026-2027. Any person in Sixth Form education over the age of 18 would still only pay £1 for the walk.

The fee for the virtual walk in school is £60 plus any travel expenses incurred by the guides.
